區塊鏈是應對氣候變化的秘密武器？

區塊鏈採用「分散式賬本技術」，在多個去中心化的區塊共享和記錄數據。當買賣雙方同意交易時，交易資料會連同其他同時在進行的交易組成數據塊（Data Block），連接先前已記錄的交易儲存在去中心化網絡，因此名為區塊鏈。原則上，所有的交易是基於「智能合約」（Smart Contract）進行，即一系列相關項目、價格、數量等規則。區塊鏈系統內的數據皆同步兼公開透明，具備去中心化、不可篡改的特性。

在能源產業轉型過程中，區塊鏈或可促進可再生能源普及，例如應用在可再生能源電力市場。傳統電網之下，由可再生能源發電者以固定電價出售再生能源予電力公司，這或使價格缺乏競爭力，又難以反映市場需求。初創公司 LO3 Energy 早於 2016 年美國紐約市布魯克林區試用區塊鏈技術，來讓住戶交易太陽能電力，於社區建立微電網（microgrid）。試點大廈之間連接電網，交易則經由區塊鏈進行，住戶所產生的太陽能電力能以市價出售，鼓勵市民將多餘太陽能發電投入電網。電力儲存在電力貿易公司的電池中，讓住戶能夠進行點對點買賣（Peer to Peer Trading）。

Is Blockchain the Secret Weapon Against Climate Change?

Blockchain uses “decentralized ledger technology” to share and record data in multiple decentralized blocks. When the buyer and the seller agree to the transaction, the transaction data will be combined with other concurrent transactions to form a data block (Data Block), which connects the previously recorded transactions and is stored in a decentralized network, hence the name blockchain. In principle, all transactions are based on “smart contracts”, a series of rules related to items, prices, and quantities. The data in the blockchain system is synchronized, open and transparent, and has the characteristics of decentralization and immutability.

Blockchain may promote the popularization of renewable energy during the energy industry’s transformation, such as in the renewable energy power market. Under the traditional power grid, renewable energy generators sell renewable energy to power companies at a fixed price, which may make the price uncompetitive and difficult to reflect the market demand. The start-up company LO3 Energy tested blockchain technology as early as 2016 in Brooklyn, New York City, to allow residents to trade solar power and build a microgrid in the community. The pilot buildings are connected to the grid, and transactions are carried out through the blockchain. The solar power generated by the residents can be sold at market prices, encouraging citizens to put excess solar power into the grid. The electricity is stored in the batteries of the electricity trading company, allowing residents to conduct peer-to-peer trading.
